Lemosho Route
The Lemosho Route on Mount Kilimanjaro is widely regarded as one of the most scenic and rewarding routes to the summit of Africa's highest mountain. Beginning on the western side of Kilimanjaro, this remote and unspoiled trail takes climbers through the beautiful Lemosho Glades, offering a peaceful trekking experience surrounded by pristine forests, diverse wildlife, and breathtaking natural landscapes.
Unlike some of the busier Kilimanjaro routes, the Lemosho Route provides a quieter and more immersive journey during the early days of the climb. The trail gradually ascends through lush rainforest before opening onto the spectacular Shira Plateau, one of Kilimanjaro's most beautiful and unique environments. With fewer climbers, dramatic scenery, and excellent acclimatization opportunities, Lemosho is an ideal choice for those seeking a more comfortable and rewarding Kilimanjaro adventure.
The route approaches the summit through the western side of the mountain before joining the Southern Circuit, eventually leading climbers toward Barafu Camp and the final summit ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m / 19,341 ft). This route option combines breathtaking scenery with a strategically designed itinerary that allows for gradual altitude adjustment and increased summit success.
For added safety during the early forest section of the trek, groups may be accompanied by an armed park ranger due to the presence of wildlife in the remote Lemosho area. This allows climbers to fully enjoy the beauty and tranquility of the mountain while traveling through one of Kilimanjaro's most untouched landscapes.
Why Choose the Lemosho Route?
The Lemosho Route is considered one of the best Kilimanjaro routes because it was developed with modern trekking principles in mind. As tourism on Mount Kilimanjaro increased, additional trails were introduced to reduce congestion and provide climbers with better acclimatization opportunities.
Compared with shorter routes, Lemosho itineraries are designed with:
-
Longer trekking distances for gradual altitude adaptation
-
More time spent on the mountain for improved acclimatization
-
Scenic and less crowded trail sections
-
A gradual approach that helps maximize summit preparation
-
A balanced combination of challenge, comfort, and adventure
The longer duration of the Lemosho Route allows climbers to experience the changing ecosystems of Kilimanjaro—from rainforest and heathland to alpine desert and the arctic summit zone—making the journey as memorable as reaching the peak itself.

After breakfast at Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) Camp, you'll continue your Lemosho Route Kilimanjaro trek as the trail climbs steadily out of the rainforest and into the breathtaking giant heather and moorland zone. Today's hike introduces you to the dramatic landscape changes that make the Lemosho Route one of the most scenic approaches to Mount Kilimanjaro.
The trail gradually becomes steeper as you leave the dense forest behind and ascend toward the spectacular Shira Ridge (3,600 m / 11,811 ft). From this viewpoint, you'll enjoy sweeping panoramic views across the surrounding landscapes before descending gently toward Shira 1 Camp, located on the vast and beautiful Shira Plateau.
After reaching Shira 1 Camp, the route continues across the open plateau, where volcanic formations, alpine streams, and expansive views create an unforgettable trekking experience. The gradual transition from lush rainforest to high-altitude savannah showcases Kilimanjaro's incredible range of ecosystems.
Continuing at a comfortable pace, you'll make your way to Shira 2 Camp (3,850 m / 12,631 ft), your overnight destination. This area is an excellent location for acclimatization, with opportunities for short exploration walks around the plateau. Take time to rest, enjoy the scenery, and allow your body to adjust to the increasing elevation.

Day 4: Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
After breakfast at Shira 2 Camp, you'll continue your Lemosho Route Kilimanjaro trek toward one of the most important acclimatization points on the journey: Lava Tower (4,600 m / 15,091 ft). This section of the route is a key part of your preparation for reaching the summit, following the proven "climb high, sleep low" approach.
Today's trail crosses the dramatic alpine desert landscape of Kilimanjaro and includes a series of gradual ascents and descents. As you gain elevation, the environment becomes increasingly rugged, with vast volcanic formations and breathtaking views of the mountain's upper slopes.
Reaching Lava Tower is an important milestone in your acclimatization process. At over 4,600 meters (15,091 ft), some climbers may experience mild altitude-related discomfort as their bodies adjust to the thinner air. This is completely normal, and your experienced guides will carefully monitor your condition throughout the day.
To maximize the benefits of this altitude exposure, your group will stop at Lava Tower for lunch, allowing you to spend valuable time at a higher elevation before beginning the descent. This additional time helps your body adapt and improves your preparation for the summit attempt.
After lunch, you'll descend approximately 700 meters (2,297 ft) through the changing alpine landscape toward Barranco Camp (3,950 m / 12,959 ft). The descent provides welcome relief while showcasing some of Kilimanjaro's most dramatic scenery.
As you approach camp, you'll see the impressive Barranco Wall, one of the mountain's most famous landmarks. Rising dramatically above the campsite, the wall may appear challenging from below, but the route is a manageable scramble rather than a technical climb. Tomorrow, you'll experience this exciting section of the trail firsthand.
After arriving at Barranco Camp, enjoy dinner, rest, and take in the incredible surroundings as you prepare for the next stage of your Kilimanjaro adventure.

Day 4: Barranco Camp through Barranco Wall to Heim Glacier to Karanga Valley
On this day your group will make an early start and after a filling breakfast, begin to hike Barranco Wall. We recommend you leave the camp as early as possible to avoid crowds of the other groups, which can slow you down. Hiking up the gorge wall is not difficult and only takes around an hour. After the climb, you can have a rest and take photos in front of the Kibo volcano.
Then you will start a more difficult hike to Karanga Camp, which features numerous ascents and descents on the route, but don't worry: our guides are experts at choosing an optimal pace for the group. After reaching the camp you will be offered warm lunch.
After a couple of hours, you will have to complete an acclimatization hike in the direction of Barafu Camp with a 200 m (656 ft) gain in altitude, and then descent back down to the camp.
Acclimatization hike:
Change in Elevation:
Karanga Camp (3,960 m / 12,992 ft)
Destination point en route to Barafu Camp (4,270 m / 14,009 ft)

Day 5: Karanga Valley to Barafu Hut
After breakfast at Karanga Camp, you will begin your final approach to Barafu Camp (4,673 m / 15,331 ft), the official base camp for your upcoming Mount Kilimanjaro summit attempt. Although today's hike is shorter than previous days, the increasing altitude makes it an important stage of preparation before the final ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m / 19,341 ft).
The trail leaves Karanga Camp and reaches the junction that connects with the Mweka Descent Route, which you will later use to return from the summit. From here, you continue upward through a rugged alpine desert landscape, following a rocky trail toward Barafu Camp.
By reaching Barafu, you complete the scenic Southern Circuit of Kilimanjaro, a route section famous for providing breathtaking views of the mountain from multiple angles. Along the way and from camp, you can enjoy spectacular views of both Mawenzi Peak and Kibo Peak, creating a dramatic backdrop for your final evening on the mountain before summit day.
Upon arrival at Barafu Camp, your mountain crew will prepare your campsite and provide a warm meal. After an early dinner, you will have time to rest, organize your summit gear, and prepare mentally and physically for the midnight departure toward the Roof of Africa.

Day 6: Barafu Hut to Uhuru Peak to Barafu Hut to Mweka Camp
Today is the most challenging and rewarding day of your Mount Kilimanjaro adventure. Your summit attempt begins shortly after midnight as you leave Barafu Camp (4,673 m / 15,331 ft) and begin the climb toward Uhuru Peak (5,895 m / 19,341 ft)—the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the entire African continent.
The ascent begins in darkness, with climbers following the glow of headlamps as they slowly make their way up the steep slopes toward Stella Point (5,739 m / 18,829 ft) and finally to Uhuru Peak. Although the trail is not technically difficult, the extreme altitude, cold temperatures, and long hours make this the most physically demanding section of the trek.
Your experienced mountain guides will support you throughout the climb, setting a slow and steady pace known as "pole pole" (slowly, slowly). This careful approach helps conserve energy, manage the effects of altitude, and maximize your chances of reaching the summit safely.
As you approach the summit, the first light of dawn illuminates the glaciers, volcanic landscape, and surrounding plains below. Standing at Uhuru Peak, you will celebrate an incredible achievement—the successful completion of your journey to the Roof of Africa.
Take time to enjoy the breathtaking views, capture unforgettable photographs, and celebrate this once-in-a-lifetime accomplishment.
After your summit experience, you will begin the descent back to Barafu Camp for a short rest and refreshments. From there, you will continue downward through the changing landscapes of Kilimanjaro toward Mweka Camp (3,067 m / 10,065 ft), located in the lush rainforest zone.
The long descent requires careful footing, as your legs will be tired after the summit climb. Trekking poles and a controlled pace will help reduce strain on your knees and joints. Upon arrival at Mweka Camp, enjoy a well-earned dinner and a comfortable night's rest surrounded by the sounds of the forest.
