Northern Circuit Route

The Northern Circuit is the newest of Kilimanjaro's eight established climbing routes. It is also the longest route on the mountain covering approximately 88 km (53 miles), and it begins on the western slopes along the scenic Lemosho Route. It is the only one that circles Mount Kilimanjaro, offering spectacular views from all four sides.

Many operators promote the Northern Circuit as the easiest route to climb Kilimanjaro, thanks to its longer itinerary and more gradual pace. While it does provide excellent acclimatization with relatively gentle daily elevation gains, the extended 8-day trek can be more physically demanding for those without experience on multi-day hiking expeditions.

What truly sets the Northern Circuit apart is its outstanding acclimatization profile, breathtaking scenery, and peaceful, off-the-beaten-path trails. As the least-traveled route on Kilimanjaro, it offers a quieter, more immersive experience for climbers seeking solitude and a deeper connection with the mountain.

Imagine spending more than a week exploring the legendary "Roof of Africa." As you gradually ascend, lush tropical rainforest gives way to the unique alpine vegetation of the mountain, including the iconic Dendrosenecio kilimanjari. Along the way, you'll enjoy sweeping views of the vast African savannah, the plains of southern Kenya, and Kilimanjaro's dramatic volcanic landscapes. After sunset, the mountain reveals another spectacle as the Milky Way stretches overhead, illuminated by countless stars.

Summit day is the unforgettable highlight of the journey. Reaching Uhuru Peak at sunrise, you'll witness golden light spilling across the mountain's famous glaciers and the surreal alpine desert that exists near the equator. For those seeking an even more extraordinary adventure, the Northern Circuit also offers the rare opportunity to spend an additional night in Kilimanjaro Crater—an experience enjoyed by only a small number of climbers each year.

  • Starting Elevation (Londorossi Gate): 2,100 m (6,890 ft)

  • Trailhead (Lemosho Glades): 2,360 m (7,742 ft)

  • Summit Elevation (Uhuru Peak): 5,895 m (19,341 ft)

  • Total Elevation Gain: Approximately 3,795 m (12,451 ft)

  • Total Hiking Distance: Approximately 88 km (55 miles)

  • Route Type: Point-to-point (not an out-and-back)

Unlike many mountain hikes, the Northern Circuit is not retraced on the descent. Climbers ascend via the Northern Circuit and descend on the Mweka Route, making the total trekking distance approximately 88 km (55 miles) from start to finish rather than a round-trip distance. The route is typically completed in 8–9 days, allowing ample time for acclimatization while experiencing Kilimanjaro's diverse landscapes from rainforest to alpine desert and the iconic summit at Uhuru Peak.

Today's trek is a relatively short and gentle hike across the expansive Shira Plateau, providing an ideal opportunity for acclimatization. The trail winds east through open moorland meadows, where you'll enjoy panoramic views of Kibo Peak, the surrounding volcanic landscape, and the distant plains below.

As you cross the plateau, you'll encounter Kilimanjaro's unique high-altitude vegetation, including colorful wildflowers and the iconic giant Dendrosenecio (giant groundsel) trees that thrive in this alpine environment. The gradual ascent allows your body to continue adjusting to the increasing elevation while offering plenty of time to appreciate the mountain's spectacular scenery.

After arriving at Shira 2 Camp, you'll have time to relax, explore the surrounding area, and enjoy another hearty meal before preparing for the more challenging days ahead.

Distance: 7 km (4 miles)

Hiking Time: 3–4 hours

Habitat: Heath & Moorland

Suggestions: Although today's hike is shorter and less strenuous, you'll be trekking above 12,000 feet (3,650 m) where temperatures are cooler and the sun's UV rays are significantly stronger. Dress in layers that can be adjusted throughout the day, stay well hydrated, and keep your warm jacket easily accessible for breaks and once you arrive at Shira 2 Camp.

Day 5: Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower to Moir Hut

Today's trek follows the classic "climb high, sleep low" acclimatization strategy, an important step in preparing your body for the higher elevations ahead. Leaving Shira 2 Camp, you'll ascend gradually across the stark alpine desert, where the landscape transforms into a dramatic expanse of volcanic rock, sparse vegetation, and panoramic mountain views.

The trail climbs steadily to the impressive Lava Tower, a towering 300-foot (90-meter) volcanic rock formation standing at 15,190 feet (4,630 m). This is the highest elevation reached so far on the trek and provides an excellent opportunity to acclimatize while enjoying lunch surrounded by spectacular scenery.

After spending time at Lava Tower, you'll leave the main route and descend to the secluded Moir Hut, nestled at the base of the Lent Hills. This quiet campsite is used almost exclusively by Northern Circuit climbers, offering a peaceful setting and excellent opportunities for optional acclimatization hikes around the surrounding hills. From here, you'll also gain a new appreciation for the vast Shira Plateau, one of the highest volcanic plateaus on Earth.

The combination of a high-altitude ascent followed by a lower sleeping elevation makes today one of the most beneficial acclimatization days of the entire expedition, helping to improve your chances of a successful summit.

Day 6: Moir Hut to Buffalo Camp

Today's trek takes you deeper into the remote northern slopes of Kilimanjaro, where you'll experience some of the mountain's quietest and least-traveled trails. Departing Moir Hut, you'll begin with a moderately steep climb into the Lent Hills, where an optional hike to one of the summits provides an excellent opportunity for additional acclimatization and spectacular panoramic views.

After returning to the main trail, the route crosses a rugged volcanic rock field before gently undulating across the alpine desert. Along the way, you'll be treated to sweeping vistas of the expansive plains stretching north toward the Kenya–Tanzania border, offering a unique perspective rarely seen by climbers on other Kilimanjaro routes.

The trail gradually descends to Buffalo Camp, a peaceful campsite tucked beneath the mountain's northern slopes. With its remote setting, crisp mountain air, and unforgettable sunset views, Buffalo Camp provides a tranquil overnight stop as you continue your journey around Africa's highest peak.

Elevation: 13,800 ft (4,206 m) to 13,200 ft (4,023 m)

Distance: 12 km (7 miles)

Hiking Time: 5–7 hours

Day 7: Buffalo Camp to Third Cave

Today's trek follows one of the most remote and least-traveled sections of the Northern Circuit, offering a true wilderness experience. Leaving Buffalo Camp, you'll climb gradually along Buffalo Ridge, where the landscape becomes increasingly open and rugged as the vegetation thins with elevation.

The trail winds through isolated valleys and across the mountain's quiet northern slopes, providing sweeping views of the Kenyan plains stretching far beyond Kilimanjaro. With few other climbers on this route, you'll have the opportunity to experience the mountain's remarkable solitude and untouched beauty.

After a series of gentle ascents and descents, you'll arrive at Third Cave Camp, a peaceful campsite nestled beneath the northern slopes of Kibo. The lower sleeping elevation continues to support acclimatization while positioning you for the climb toward School Hut and the summit in the days ahead.

This quieter stage of the Northern Circuit showcases Kilimanjaro's wild northern side, where expansive landscapes, volcanic terrain, and breathtaking vistas create one of the most memorable days of the entire expedition.

Elevation: 13,200 ft (4,023 m) to 12,700 ft (3,870 m)

Distance: 8 km (5 miles)

Hiking Time: 5–7 hours

Habitat: Heath & Alpine Moorland

Day 8: Third Cave to School Hut

Today's trek brings you to School Hut, the final campsite before your summit attempt. Leaving Third Cave Camp, you'll make a steady climb across the barren alpine desert and over the broad Saddle, a dramatic plateau that stretches between Kibo, Kilimanjaro's highest peak, and the jagged spires of Mawenzi.

The landscape becomes increasingly stark and otherworldly, with volcanic gravel, scattered rock formations, and expansive views replacing all vegetation. Although the distance is relatively short, the higher elevation makes the hike more physically demanding, so a slow, deliberate pace is essential for continued acclimatization.

Upon arriving at School Hut, you'll settle into camp, enjoy an early dinner, and receive a final briefing from your guide in preparation for summit night. Rest is a priority, as you'll wake around midnight to begin the challenging ascent to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. A good night's sleep, proper hydration, and careful preparation will help set the stage for the unforgettable journey to the Roof of Africa.

Elevation: 12,700 ft (3,870 m) to 15,600 ft (4,755 m)

Distance: 5 km (3 miles)

Hiking Time: 4–5 hours

Habitat: Alpine Desert

Day 9: School Hut to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

Around midnight, you'll begin the final ascent to Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the African continent. Hiking by headlamp beneath a sky filled with stars, you'll make a slow, steady climb across volcanic scree in the cold mountain air. This is the most physically and mentally demanding stage of the expedition, requiring determination, patience, and the encouragement of your guides.

After several hours of climbing, you'll reach Gilman's Point at 18,600 feet (5,681 m) on the crater rim. If conditions are favorable, you'll witness a breathtaking sunrise illuminating the rugged silhouette of Mawenzi Peak and the surrounding glaciers. Continuing along the crater rim, the final stretch leads to Uhuru Peak (19,341 ft / 5,895 m), where you'll celebrate reaching the Roof of Africa and enjoy unforgettable panoramic views stretching across Tanzania and Kenya.

After taking time for photos and celebration, you'll begin the long descent. Returning to Barafu Camp for a well-earned lunch and a short rest, you'll then continue downhill through the alpine desert and into the lush rainforest. The trail can be steep, rocky, and demanding on the knees, making trekking poles especially helpful.

By late afternoon, you'll arrive at Mweka Camp, nestled in the upper rainforest. Mist or light rain is common here, creating a cool, refreshing atmosphere after the summit push. Enjoy your final dinner on the mountain, celebrate your accomplishment with your trekking team, and get a well-deserved night's rest after one of the most rewarding days of your adventure.

Day 10: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Your final day on Mount Kilimanjaro begins with a leisurely descent through the lush montane rainforest. The trail winds beneath a dense canopy of towering trees, vibrant ferns, and tropical vegetation, providing a peaceful conclusion to your unforgettable journey.

As you lose elevation, the air becomes warmer and more humid, and the trail may be wet, muddy, and slippery, especially after rainfall. Trekking poles can be especially helpful during this final descent.

Upon reaching Mweka Gate, you'll complete the park exit formalities and receive your official Kilimanjaro summit certificate—a lasting reminder of your achievement. Your driver will then transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi, where a hot shower, comfortable accommodations, and a well-earned celebration await.

Congratulations on completing the Northern Circuit Route and standing atop Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Your journey across one of the world's most iconic mountains is an accomplishment you'll remember for a lifetime.

10 Day Northern Circuit Route

Estimate
$3300

The 10-Day Northern Circuit (Daytime Summit) itinerary follows the same scenic route as the classic 9-day Northern Circuit but replaces the traditional midnight summit push with a daytime ascent.

Instead of beginning the summit attempt around midnight, climbers ascend after sunrise, avoiding the extreme cold, darkness, and strong nighttime winds that are typical of a conventional summit day. The result is a more comfortable and enjoyable climb, with better visibility and a shorter, less physically demanding summit experience.

After reaching Uhuru Peak, climbers descend to Barafu Camp rather than continuing all the way to Mweka Camp. This more gradual descent provides additional time for recovery and extends the itinerary by one day, making it an excellent option for those seeking a more relaxed summit experience.

The 10-Day Northern Circuit (Daytime Summit) is ideal for trekkers who prefer a less strenuous summit schedule while still enjoying the exceptional acclimatization, spectacular scenery, and high success rates that make the Northern Circuit one of Kilimanjaro's premier routes.
